Southern California Beach Valuation Project - Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties

The three counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo are commonly referred to as the Tri-county Area by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) regarding issues of oil and gas development. The Tri-county Area study of beaches will build on lessons learned from recent research conducted in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Background

Phase 3 of the project will be to use Phase 2 models on the tri-county area beaches (i.e. a benefits transfer exercise). Site characteristics for all tri-county area beaches have been compiled. Surveys on tri-county beach users have not been concluded. The benefits transfer exercise will use LA and Orange County beach models developed in Phase 2 and beach site characteristics for tri-county beaches to develop estimates of economic value for tri-county beaches and how the economic values change with changes in tri-county beach characteristics (e.g. water quality, availability of restrooms, lifeguards, etc.).

Status

Phase 2 models now complete.
