A county is considered a coastal zone county if it intersects with a state's coastal zone boundary. The definition of each state's coastal zone boundary varies and can be based on political jurisdictions or by natural features. For example, four states have their total land area within the coastal zone: Rhode Island, Delaware, Florida, and Hawaii. Additionally, some states such as Washington and South Carolina use county boundaries as their coastal zone boundary. Each individual state page contains the coastal zone definition for that state (see links in the above table).
