Coastal Zone County Definition

A county is considered a coastal zone county if it intersects with a state's coastal zone boundary. The definition of each state's coastal zone boundary varies and can be based on political jurisdictions or by natural features. For example, four states have their total land area within the coastal zone: Rhode Island, Delaware, Florida, and Hawaii. Additionally, some states such as Washington and South Carolina use county boundaries as their coastal zone boundary. Each individual state page contains the coastal zone definition for that state (see links in the above table).

Quick Facts

The total number of full-time and part-time jobs in coastal zone counties increased by approximately 30 million from 1970 to 2000.
The leading states in increased employment in coastal zone counties from 1970 to 2000 were California with 8 million jobs, followed by Florida with 7 million jobs.
The leading coastal zone counties in employment in 2000 were Los Angeles County, CA, with 5.5 million jobs, Cook County, IL, with 3.4 million jobs, and New York, NY, with 2.8 million jobs.
