Providing coastal zone population based on counties is somewhat coarse, however, it allows for the analysis of times series data. The STICS website provides coastal zone population and demographic data for 2000 by smaller level geography.

Coastal Zone County Definition

A county is considered a coastal zone county if it intersects with a state's coastal zone boundary. The definition of each state's coastal zone boundary varies and can be based on political jurisdictions or by natural features. For example, four states have their total land area within the coastal zone: Rhode Island, Delaware, Florida, and Hawaii. Additionally, some states such as Washington and South Carolina use county boundaries as their coastal zone boundary. Each individual state page contains the coastal zone definition for that state (see links in the above table).

Quick Facts

From 1970 to 2004 coastal zone county population has increased by approximately 34 million people. This is an increase of 38% (where the entire nation's population increased by 45%).
The two leading states in absolute coastal zone county population change from 1970 to 2004 were California and Florida, growing by 9.3 and 10.6 million, respectively.
The leading states in percent coastal zone county population change from 1970 to 2004 were Alaska and Florida, growing by 130 percent and 156 percent, respectively.
In 2000, coastal zone counties contained approximately 42 percent of the nationís total housing supply.
Of the 48 million housing units in coastal zone counties, 3% are seasonal.
